Most machining cost is decided before the RFQ is sent. These are the seven changes our estimators suggest most often — and what each one typically saves.
1. Loosen the default tolerance block
A title-block default of ±0.001″ applies to every dimension, including the ones that don’t matter. Reserve tight tolerances for the features that need them; leave the rest at ±0.005″. Savings: 10–20%.
2. Radius your internal corners
Sharp internal corners need EDM or tiny end mills run slowly. An internal radius of one-third the pocket depth lets a rigid tool cut fast. Savings: up to 15% on pocket-heavy parts.
3. Deepen your pockets carefully
Tool overhang past 4× diameter means slower feeds and chatter risk. Split deep features across both faces if you can.
4. Standardize thread sizes
Five different tapped sizes means five tools and five gages. Consolidate to two or three.
5. Question mirror-image parts
A left- and right-hand version doubles programming and fixturing. Symmetric designs that work in both positions cut program cost in half.
6. Spec the finish, not the process
Call out Ra targets and let the shop choose how to hit them.
7. Send the STEP file with the drawing
Quoting from PDFs alone adds modeling time and quoting risk — both show up in your price.
